What We Don't Do

While the PUB has a broad mandate to ensure reliable public utility services to Manitobans, it is limited in its jurisdiction based on the authority of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly.

Regarding Manitoba Hydro, the PUB does NOT

  • Regulate or manage the electricity daily operations
  • Approve Manitoba Hydro's electricity capital expenditures  including dams, transmission lines or export contracts
  • Regulate Manitoba Hydro's electricity disconnection
  • Regulate electricity service extensions by Manitoba Hydro

Regarding Manitoba Public Insurance, the PUB does NOT

  • Regulate the daily operations of MPI
  • Approve the rates or premiums for MPI extension and special risk extension insurance

Regarding Water and Wastewater utilities, the PUB does NOT

  • Regulate the daily operations of water and wastewater utilities
  • Oversee water quality for the province of Manitoba, including the City of WInnipeg
  • Regulate the water or wastewater rates for the City of Winnipeg

Regarding Other, the PUB does NOT

  • Approve rates for propane sold in tanks
  • Approve rates for gasoline, diesel or other petroleum products

ABOUT US

The Manitoba Public Utilities Board (the Board) is an independent quasi-judicial administrative tribunal operating under the authority of the Manitoba Legislature. While the current Public Utilities Board Act was passed in 1959 the Board has regulated services under other legislation since 1913.
