Government Cheque Cashing

Also part of the Consumer Protection Act, the PUB is mandated to set the maximum amount, or to establish a rate, formula or tariff for cashing or negotiating a government cheque. Like the payday loan industry, these rates are reviewed every three years with the PUB reporting to the government with our recommendations.

Passenger Transport

The City of Winnipeg Charter Act provides that, where the city signs an agreement with an operator to transport customers for a fixed fee within the City of Winnipeg, the agreement must be approved by the PUB. The PUB must also approve the operator, who then becomes subject to ongoing PUB oversight. Few of those agreements have been considered by the PUB; they have mostly been limited to transport services for children and the elderly.

Public Safety Emergency Services

The Emergency 911 Safety Answering Point Act was enacted in 2005/06. Applications for provision of 911 services can appeal to the PUB for their complaints about services rendered in the 911 emergency call. Moreover, service providers who were refused a license may also apply to the Board as an appeal body. To date, no appeals have been filed with the Board.
